Facebook may have relied on a legal exemption in American law to allow Hong Kong chief executive candidate John Lee Ka-chiu to continue using the social media platform, legal experts have said.
It would help explain why the tech giant did not follow YouTube in delisting the former official’s account to comply with US sanction laws, choosing to allow his campaign page to remain albeit with caveats.
Lee, who was chief secretary before he announced he would run for the city’s top job, was among more than a dozen officials sanctioned by the United States in 2020 over Beijing’s imposition of the national security law on Hong Kong.

Beijing and the Hong Kong government have lashed out at American technology giant Google and Washington for terminating the YouTube channel of chief executive candidate John Lee Ka-chiu due to US sanctions laws, with the Chinese foreign ministry calling the move “completely wrong and unreasonable”.
Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin on Thursday said the incident once again exposed “the hypocrisy and double standard” of the United States, which was bent on undermining free speech and fairness in cyberspace to achieve its political objectives.
“The US is interfering in Hong Kong affairs using different excuses and has evil intentions in destroying Hong Kong’s chief executive election,” he said, adding Google was also complicit. “It is completely wrong and unreasonable. We firmly oppose this.”

Lee had a packed schedule on Monday, with a total of 10 campaign stops across the city within a nine-hour window as he continued to lobby for support a day after securing enough nominations to officially stand in the leadership election on May 8.
During one campaign stop, a reporter asked the former No 2 official if he would seek to reintroduce the previously withdrawn extradition bill, which would have allowed the extradition of criminals to jurisdictions with which the city had lacked a treaty, including mainland China.

Chinese President Xi Jinping was elected a delegate to the Communist Party’s national congress on Friday, a procedural move that is likely to lead to him securing an unprecedented third term as the party’s boss.
Xi’s election as a congress delegate was confirmed by a unanimous vote at the party’s congress in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, state news agency Xinhua reported.
“Xi was nominated by the Communist Party Central Committee as a candidate for delegate to the 20th national congress, scheduled to be held in the second half of 2022,” Xinhua reported.
“The announcement of Xi’s unanimous election won a burst of sustained and warm applause at the regional congress on Friday morning.”

China’s political and legal affairs chief, a protégé of President Xi Jinping, has ordered a new round of inspections to remove potential risks ahead of this year’s all-important Communist Party national congress.
“[We] must consistently innovate with our political and legal work to welcome the victorious hosting of the 20th party congress,” said Chen Yixin, secretary general of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, China’s top law enforcement body.
His remarks were reported on the social media account of the commission, which oversees all of China’s police force, prosecutors, judges and its state security personnel.
Chen ordered 10 topics for research to identify and remove likely social and political risks, the report said, including legal issues related to foreign entities, smart management and the internet.

L’armée française a filmé ce qu’elle affirme être des mercenaires russes en train d’enterrer des corps près de la base de Gossi, dans le nord du Mali, dans le but, selon elle, d’accuser les Français d’avoir laissé un charnier derrière eux.
